MAKOplasty® Robotic Surgery

MAKOplasty is a highly advanced and minimally invasive surgery in which our expert surgeons resurface the damaged parts of a joint (knee or hip) while sparing healthy bones and ligaments. At Upstate Orthopedics, we have the only physicians in Central New York who offer this robot-assisted surgery. Patients with osteoarthritis of the knee that affects only one part of the joint or advanced osteoarthritis of the hip are most likely to be candidates for robotic MAKOplasty.

Our MAKOplasty surgeons perform total knee resurfacing and total hip arthroplasty with advanced robotic technology. Like arthroscopy, MAKOplasty robotic surgery is performed through smaller incisions rather than open surgery, leading to less scarring, bleeding, and pain, as well as a quicker recovery. Robotic arm technology assists your surgeon in preparing the hip or knee joint and placing the implant with a greater level of accuracy. One of the key advantages of this high-end procedure is that it spares healthy tissues (bones, ligaments, and tendons), increasing the effectiveness of the surgery.

One or two weeks prior to surgery, you will have a CT scan on the affected joint, which your doctor will use to create your unique surgical plan. The surgical plan is then used for designing and crafting an optimal and personalized implant. The advanced imaging and surgical technologies at Upstate Orthopedics allows our surgeons to place the implant (resurface) in the exact required position. This surgery requires experience, creativity, and skill, and you can count on our surgeons to deliver excellent results. Our team will ensure your experience with this minimally invasive procedure is comfortable, while also being highly effective.

Opting to get MAKOplasty robot assisted surgery will not only relieve you from the exhausting pain of osteoarthritis, but will also help you carry on your daily activities in a much more comfortable way. After surgery and a good recovery, you’ll pretty much be able to do anything you want.

A lot of patients who are advised or prescribed a knee replacement or hip replacement procedure are good candidates for MAKOplasty. Our qualified surgeons will assess you thoroughly to ensure which procedure is best for you. Moreover, because MAKOplasty preserves the healthy parts of your joint, you can still have joint replacement surgery down the road, if necessary.
