Upstate Orthopedics just received notice that Karen Howard, MS received a $165,000 Fellowship from the National Institutes of Health to fund her research. Karen is an MD/PhD student here at Upstate. Kenneth Mann, PhD serves as her Research Advisor, Megan Oest, PhD serves as a Co-advisor, and Tim Damron, MD serves as her clinical mentor. These are highly competitive awards and the National Institute Of Arthritis And Musculoskeletal And Skin Diseases (NIAMS) of the NIH with only 5% of applications receiving the award. The title of her research project is: “Supraphysiologic Fluid Shear Stress as an Alternative Cause of Short-term Aseptic Loosening in Total Knee Replacements”.
