Hip Preservation Techniques
The fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeons at Upstate Orthopedics are leaders in musculoskeletal care and are committed to the advancement of orthopedic treatment to improve patient outcomes. For patients with hip pain and injuries, our hip preservation specialists develop minimally invasive surgical plans that improve function and can possibly delay or eliminate the need for total hip replacement.
What is Hip Preservation?
With hip preservation, our surgeons use minimally invasive techniques, such as hip arthroscopy, to address bony abnormalities and repair or reconstruct damaged structures in the hip. This avoids the need to replace the hip joint in its entirety.
The goal of hip preservation is to improve function and lessen pain in the hip for normal activities. This technique is most effective in patients before the onset of moderate to severe hip osteoarthritis.
Why Choose Hip Preservation?
Benefits of hip preservation include:
- Often minimally invasive
- Only 2-3 small incisions if arthroscopic treatment is appropriate
- Ability to preserve/maintain the native joint
- Reduced pain
Conditions We Treat
Structural issues may be present from birth, while others can develop these issues throughout childhood and into young adulthood. This can be exacerbated by cutting/pivoting sports such as hockey, lacrosse, soccer, and football.
Examples of treatable conditions include:
- Hip dysplasia
- Femoroacetabular impingement
- Cam deformity
- Labral tears
- Early cartilage damage
Hip Preservation Goals
Before surgery, conservative options may include activity modification, physical therapy, over-the-counter pain medication, and joint injections.
When these approaches have been exhausted, surgery may be considered to:
- Treat pain
- Improve function and quality of life
- Restore activity
- Prevent long-term damage and arthritis
- Delay and possibly prevent the need for hip replacement
