Dr. Mann Receives Fellowship from ASME
The American Society of Mechanical Engineers elected Kenneth Mann, PhD as a fellow of the society, recognizing his contributions to biomechanical engineering and his support of the society. Of ASME's 117,503 members, only 3,179 have been elected as fellows.

Dr. Oast Receives Grant to Study Diet Consumption During Pregnancy
Megan Oest, PhD received a $12,600 grant from the Golisano Children's Hospital to study the effects of Western diet consumption during pregnancy on health of mesenchymal stem cells in the offspring.

Spine/trauma surgeon, Dr. Nikhil A. Thakur, recently published an article on Benign Tumors of the Spine in the Journal of Amercian Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. JAAOS is published by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the world's largest medical association of musculoskeletal specialists. Each issue includes richly illustrated peer-reviewed articles focused on clinical diagnosis and management.

Kenneth Mann, PhD Awarded Grant from National Institutes of Health
Kenneth Mann, PhD was awarded a 5 year, $1.94 million dollar grant from the National Institutes of Health, Department of Health and Human Services. His research team will investigate how bone that interlocks with cement for fixation of total knee replacements changes after surgery. The goal of the project is to find new approaches to prevent loss of fixation through changes in implant design and surgical technique.

Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Fund Awards Research Grant
Kenneth Mann, PhD. and Timothy Damron, MD. have been awarded a $50,000 research grant from the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Fund of Central New York. The goal of the research is to improve fracture risk assessment for patients with metastatic breast cancer lesions to bone using CT scans and computer modeling methods.

2012 Research Studies at Upstate Orthopedics
Researchers in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at SUNY Upstate recently presented a series of 12 scientific papers at the Annual Meeting of the Orthopaedic Research Society Meeting in San Francisco, CA (Feb 4-7, 2012). The Orthopaedic Research Society is the world’s largest research society dedicated to the study of diseases of the skeleton and muscle. The work was completed by teams of basic science and clinical faculty, research staff, and students.
