Upstate Orthopedics

Diagnostic Imaging

Upstate Orthopedics is fully equipped with state-of-the-art on-site imaging equipment to help your doctor diagnose and treat musculoskeletal problems. Diagnostic imaging, such as X-rays, MRIs, and CT scans are helpful tools for evaluating muscle pain, joint pain, bone pain, and soft tissue injuries. By providing these tests on site, we can quickly diagnose problems and begin treatment sooner.

X-Rays

X-rays are used to evaluate fractures, undiagnosed pain, and the cause of swelling or stiffness in a joint. X-rays are painless, but you might have to hold still for a few moments while the picture is taken, which could cause some discomfort.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

In orthopedics, MRIs are used to view soft tissue injuries, such as a ligament or tendon injury. These images are usually ordered after an X-ray to further evaluate your problem.

MRI uses a magnetic field and a sophisticated computer system to give reliable and detailed images of the body. They can help provide information for a fast and accurate diagnosis and possibly reduce the need for exploratory surgery or other diagnostic procedures.

MRIs are also painless, but you will need to remain still for a period of time during the procedure. The length of an MRI depends on the size of the area being evaluated.

CT Scan

Traditional X-rays use a stationary X-ray machine to create two-dimensional images of a specific area of your body, much like a photograph. During a CT scan, or computerized tomography, an X-ray unit rotates around your body and takes cross-sectional 3-D pictures, like slices, of the inside of your body. A computer then integrates these images to show bones and soft tissues with greater detail and clarity than regular X-rays. CT scans are used to visualize injuries to bones and surrounding soft tissues such as tendons, ligaments, and muscles.
